Confirmation with First Eucharist (Communion)

In the Diocese of Phoenix it is the norm to celebrate Confirmation and First Eucharist in the same celebration when the candidate is in third grade, However, if a child is older than this, but baptized Catholic, the child can still be prepared for reception of the Sacrament of Eucharist.

As part of the child’s preparation, the parents will be given written materials to assist them in sharing with their child, reading to them, preparing with them, and praying with them. During the preparation, the following will be emphasized:

For those new to this lower age for Confirmation, you might find the following  helpful to understand the theology behind Bishop Olmsted’s decision to confirm at the third grade level. Read Bishop Olmsted’s pastoral letter here.

Attendance at the retreat is mandatory for the child and at least one parent. Please see the Confirmation section for information on sponsors, Confirmation names, and other issues related to Confirmation for your child. If you have questions about these sacraments, please contact Roxanna at the parish office.

NOTE: Sacramental preparation for children through high school is in addition to a “regular program of religious formation.”
